This first section is 120 meters long and has the deepest area of the main fissure. The fissure drops 23 meters before it heads down under the rocks to a maximum deepness of 45 meters.

The second section is called the "Silfra Hall". This is the location where the fissure first widens out and opens into a zone which is 10 meter deep and 50 meters long. From here you will move in to the Cathedral Zone of the fissure, which is the most awesome place. 100 meters in length and 20 meters of deepness. At this point you will see and feel where the name comes from.

While entering the Cathedral Zone it is possible to see the end. The water is so clear that the visibility is over 100 m. The reasons for this water clarity are, first, the water is cold (2°C – 4°C year round ) as it is glacial water from the nearby Langjökull. Secondly, this water is filtered through porous underground lava for 30-100 years until it reaches the north end of Thingvellir lake. The Silfra water is as pure as water can get and you can drink it at anytime during your dive or snorkel.
